Overview
Todd Michael Muller (born 23 December 1968) is a New Zealand politician who represents the Bay of Plenty electorate in the House of Representatives. He entered Parliament at the 2014 general election as the electorate MP for Bay of Plenty and has been associated with the centre-right National Party. In 2020 Muller was elected leader of the National Party and served as Leader of the Opposition for a short period before resigning for health reasons.
Early life and pre-parliamentary career
Before entering national politics Muller had experience in the private sector and in industries tied to New Zealand's primary production. He lived and worked in the Bay of Plenty region, which has a significant horticultural and agricultural economy. His background in the local business and farming community shaped his focus on regional development and primary industries when he later entered politics.
Parliamentary career
Muller won the Bay of Plenty seat in 2014 and took his place in Parliament as a National Party MP. As a member of Parliament he participated in debates and committee work representing the interests of his electorate. He was seen as a voice for regional and rural concerns, and he raised issues relevant to local economies, infrastructure and primary producers during his time in the House.
Leadership of the National Party
On 22 May 2020 Muller was chosen by his party to replace Simon Bridges as leader of the National Party and thereby became the official Leader of the Opposition. His leadership period coincided with an intense phase of political activity ahead of the 2020 general election. After 53 days in the role he announced his resignation on 14 July 2020, saying that the position had had a negative effect on his health and that he was "not the best person to be Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the New Zealand National Party at this critical time for New Zealand." His resignation led to a further change in party leadership later that month.
Political stance and areas of emphasis
Muller's politics align with the centre-right orientation of the National Party. During and after his selection as leader he emphasised themes common to his party and electorate: strong regional economies, support for primary industries, and attention to local infrastructure and business conditions. His short leadership did not allow for a long programme of policy change, but his public profile was defined by his focus on constituency and sector-specific concerns.
