History and development

Purmerend has roots that go back several centuries and developed historically as a market town serving agricultural and peat-working areas nearby. Administration and merger with Beemster

On 1 January 2022 the former municipality of Beemster was incorporated into Purmerend. That merger added a distinctive polder landscape and several villages to the municipal territory, enlarging its area and bringing together urban and rural administration under one local government.

Economy, transport and culture

Purmerend’s economy is service-oriented with retail, education, healthcare and light industry. Good road and rail links connect the city to Amsterdam and regional hubs, making daily commuting straightforward.
