Natália Šubrtová (born 1 May 1989 in Kežmarok) is a Slovak alpine ski guide who specializes in guiding visually impaired competitors down race courses. As a sighted guide she skis with and directs a visually impaired athlete, providing verbal instructions, route information and pace guidance so the pair can negotiate gates, terrain changes and high-speed turns safely and competitively. She is part of Slovakia's para-alpine skiing community and has competed at international events.

Role and technique

A sighted guide fulfills both navigational and tactical roles. Guides typically ski slightly ahead or alongside the athlete, use clear voice commands or radio headsets, and rehearse timing, line choice and braking points. Trust, consistent communication and synchronized movement are essential: the guide reads the course and conveys split-second information while matching the athlete's speed and style. Guides train physically and mentally to perform under race pressure and variable mountain conditions.

Career highlights

Šubrtová is best known for her partnership with visually impaired Slovak skier Henrieta Farkašová. At the 2011 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships Farkašová and Šubrtová achieved top results across multiple disciplines, taking first place in several women's visually impaired events. Their notable victories at that competition included:

  • Downhill (women's visually impaired)
  • Slalom (women's visually impaired)
  • Giant slalom (women's visually impaired)
  • Super combined (women's visually impaired)

Partnership and preparation

The athlete–guide relationship extends beyond race day: pairs develop specific signals, practice course inspection together and build mutual confidence through repeated training runs. Šubrtová's responsibilities during competitions include scouting snow conditions, setting a consistent line, and adapting instructions to the athlete's reactions. This teamwork model is central to success in visually impaired alpine skiing.

Importance and recognition

Guides like Šubrtová play a decisive role in para-alpine sport. International rules recognize the guide and the athlete as a competing team, and at major championships both members are acknowledged for podium finishes. Šubrtová's achievements with Farkašová have contributed to Slovakia's presence in visually impaired alpine events and helped raise awareness of the skill and coordination required for guided skiing.
