Overview
Mats Erik Johansson (26 December 1951 – 24 June 2017) was a Swedish journalist and politician. A member of the Moderate Party, he represented his party in the Riksdag from 2006 until 2014. During his time in parliament he concentrated on foreign policy and security matters and served as a delegate to key national bodies dealing with those areas.
Journalism and background
Before and alongside his political engagement, Johansson worked in journalism. His professional background in media gave him experience in public communication and an understanding of international affairs that informed his later parliamentary work. Like many journalists-turned-politicians, he brought an emphasis on analysis, public debate and reporting to his political role.
Parliamentary career (2006–2014)
Johansson was elected to the Riksdag in 2006 as a member of the Moderate Party and served two parliamentary terms until 2014. In the Riksdag he took part in committees and delegations related to Sweden's external relations and national security. His parliamentary activity focused on matters where foreign policy, defence and Sweden's role in international organisations intersect.
Foreign Affairs Committee and the War Delegation
While a member of parliament Johansson was a delegate in the Foreign Affairs Committee and the War Delegation. These bodies have important functions in Swedish parliamentary practice:
- The Foreign Affairs Committee examines the government’s foreign policy, international agreements and Sweden’s relations with other states and organisations.
- The War Delegation is a special constitutional body that can be activated in times of war or serious crisis to ensure continuity of parliamentary functions related to national defence and decision-making.
Political focus and legacy
Johansson’s work combined journalistic experience with a focus on international and security questions. Within the Moderate Party he participated in debates about Sweden’s foreign policy orientation and preparedness. He is remembered as a public figure who moved between media and politics and who contributed to discussions on Sweden’s external responsibilities and defence planning.
Death
Mats Johansson died on 24 June 2017. Obituaries and remembrances noted his dual career in journalism and parliamentary service and his involvement in foreign policy matters during his time in the Riksdag.
