Mário Veloso de Araújo Cabral (15 January 1934 – 17 August 2020), better known as Nicha Cabral, was a Portuguese racing driver who became one of the country’s early names in international motorsport. Born in Cedofeita, Portugal, he is chiefly remembered for his brief but notable appearance in Formula One during the late 1950s.
Formula One career
Cabral took part in five Formula One World Championship Grands Prix and started four of them. He made his championship debut in 1959, at a time when the sport was still dominated by European teams, privately entered cars, and a much smaller calendar than in later decades. He did not score any championship points, but his entry into the series marked an important step for Portuguese participation at the highest level of racing.
Drivers from Portugal were still uncommon in top-level Grand Prix competition during that period, so Cabral’s presence carried significance beyond results alone. Like many racers of his generation, he competed in an era when safety standards, machinery, and race preparation were far different from modern Formula One.
Legacy and significance
Although his Formula One record was short, Cabral remains a recognized figure in Portuguese motorsport history. He is often mentioned alongside other early Portuguese racers who helped build national interest in international circuit racing. His career illustrates how drivers could move between local events, sports cars, and championship Grands Prix in the mid-20th century.
