E. Donnall Thomas (March 15, 1920 – October 20, 2012) was an American physician and researcher best known for developing clinical bone marrow transplantation. His efforts transformed transplantation from an experimental procedure into a reproducible therapy for patients with leukemia, aplastic anemia and certain inherited blood disorders. In 1990 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Joseph E. Murray for contributions to cell and organ transplantation.
