Competition format

The league traditionally stages two separate tournaments each calendar year, commonly referred to as the Apertura and the Finalización. Each tournament normally features a regular stage followed by post-season rounds (playoffs or a final) to decide the champion of that half-season. The exact format, number of participants and details of the knockout phase have changed over time as DIMAYOR adjusts the competition for sporting and commercial reasons.

Promotion and relegation

History and notable periods

One of the league's best-known chapters is the late 1940s–early 1950s era known as "El Dorado," when Colombian clubs attracted high-profile foreign players and operated with considerable independence from international transfer controls. Since then the league has professionalized, developed youth academies and modernized commercial arrangements. Over decades Primera A has produced many players who moved to top leagues around the world.

Several clubs have been historically prominent in the competition. Atlético Nacional, Millonarios, América de Cali, Deportivo Cali and Independiente Santa Fe are among the best-known names, with regional rivals and city derbies generating intense local interest.
