Ardico Magnini (21 October 1928 – 3 July 2020) was an Italian footballer who played primarily as a defender. Born in Pistoia, Italy, he became best known for his years with Fiorentina in the 1950s and for representing Italy at senior level between 1953 and 1957.
Magnini established himself in the early 1950s as a reliable presence in the back line. He was valued for his positional sense, concentration, and steady temperament rather than for flamboyant play. Operated often as a full-back or as part of a defensive pair, his style reflected mid-century Italian emphasis on organization, tactical discipline and collective defending.
Club career
Magnini spent the most significant portion of his professional career at Fiorentina, where he was a regular from 1950 to 1958. He was a member of the squad that captured the club's first Serie A championship in the 1955–56 season, a landmark achievement that marked Fiorentina's arrival among Italy's leading teams. During his time at the club he contributed to a stable defensive unit that underpinned Fiorentina's domestic success and growing reputation.
International career
On the international stage Magnini represented Italy between 1953 and 1957. Although he was not among the most celebrated stars of his generation, his selection for the national side attested to his standing as a dependable and competent defender in an era of competitive selection. He took part in a number of official matches and friendly fixtures while competing with other established defenders for a place in the team.
Later life and legacy
After retiring from top-level football, Magnini remained associated with the sport and was remembered by supporters and club historians as a part of Fiorentina's formative golden period. He received tributes on his death on 3 July 2020 at the age of 91, when former teammates, clubs and local media recalled his role in a successful decade for the club.
