2018–19 UEFA Champions League group stage

Format and draw

Teams were allocated into four seeding pots prior to the draw, with the title holder placed in Pot 1 alongside other top-ranked clubs according to UEFA coefficients. The official draw took place in late August 2018. Each group paired clubs so that every team played three home and three away matches against the other group members.

Schedule and progression

Matchdays were scheduled across six rounds between 18 September and 12 December 2018. After the six matchdays, the top two teams from each group progressed to the round of 16. The third-placed teams were transferred to the Europa League round of 32, while fourth place meant elimination from European competition for that season.

Tiebreakers

When clubs finished level on points, UEFA's established tiebreaking procedures were applied. These prioritize results between the tied teams before overall group performance. Typical criteria, in order, include:

1. Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams
2. Goal difference in head-to-head matches
3. Goals scored in head-to-head matches (including away goals)
4. If still tied, reapplication of head-to-head criteria or use of overall group goal difference and goals scored
5. Further separations may use number of wins, disciplinary points and UEFA club coefficients

Participants and significance

The group stage featured many of Europe's highest-profile clubs from the continent's major leagues as well as qualifiers that advanced through preliminary rounds. For clubs and supporters it represents both a financial milestone and a sporting challenge: group-stage performance affects revenue, UEFA ranking points and the route through the rest of the competition.
