Overview

Win Myint (Burmese: ဝင်းမြင့်; born 8 November 1951) is a Burmese politician associated with the National League for Democracy (NLD). He rose from parliamentary office to preside as the 10th President of Myanmar from 29 March 2018 until his removal on 1 February 2021. He is widely regarded as a close ally of Aung San Suu Kyi and was a member of parliament and speaker before becoming president.

Early political rise

Win Myint entered national politics as part of the NLD’s return to formal legislative roles after years of military-dominated rule. He was elected to the House of Representatives in the 2012 by-elections that brought many NLD figures into the legislature, and subsequently served as Speaker of the lower house (Pyithu Hluttaw) from 2016 to 2018. His parliamentary career established him as a consensus figure inside the party and the legislature.

Presidency and role

Win Myint became president following the resignation of his predecessor in March 2018. Under Myanmar’s 2008 constitution, the office of president operates alongside substantial powers reserved to the military and the civilian post of State Counsellor, held by Aung San Suu Kyi during his term. Observers described his presidency as operating within those constitutional limits while supporting the broader agenda of the NLD government on governance and reform.

2021 coup, detention and charges

On 1 February 2021 the Tatmadaw (Myanmar military) seized power, detained many civilian leaders and announced the termination of the existing government. Win Myint was removed from office and reported to have been detained by the military; subsequent reports indicated he faced legal charges. The coup reversed much of the NLD’s political progress and triggered widespread domestic protest and international concern.

Significance and distinctions

Win Myint’s political career illustrates the constrained transition Myanmar underwent in the 2010s: civilian leaders won elections and led government institutions, yet worked within a constitutional framework that preserved military influence. His trajectory—from legislator to speaker to president, and then to detainee after the coup—captures the advances and setbacks of Myanmar’s recent political history.
