Overview

Vladimír Šmicer (born 24 May 1973) is a retired Czech professional footballer who played principally as an attacking midfielder or wide midfielder. He featured for clubs in his native Czech lands, France and England, and represented both Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic at international level. His best-known moment on the club stage was scoring in the dramatic 2005 UEFA Champions League final.

Club career

Šmicer came through the Czech club system and established himself domestically before moving abroad. In France he was part of the RC Lens squad that achieved unprecedented success for the club in the late 1990s. He joined Liverpool in the late 1990s and spent several seasons in the English Premier League, where he combined energy on the flank with an ability to strike from distance. Later in his career he returned to French football and finished his playing days back in the Czech Republic.
