Naidu's public life spans decades and multiple legislative terms. He rose through student and organizational politics before taking on party responsibilities and parliamentary duties. Over the course of his career he has been a prominent figure in the party apparatus, including a period as national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party from 2002 to 2004. At the national level he has served in Cabinet positions in different administrations, most notably in the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and earlier in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee ministry.

Vice Presidency and parliamentary role
The Vice President of India holds constitutional duties as the second-highest constitutional officeholder and serves as the ex officio Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, the upper chamber of Parliament. During his tenure, Naidu presided over sittings of the Rajya Sabha and acted as a custodian of parliamentary procedures and decorum. The vice-presidential office also involves representing India at ceremonial occasions and undertaking diplomatic and constitutional tasks when required.
Policy interests and ministerial initiatives
While in the Union Cabinet, Naidu worked on portfolios that bridged urban planning, housing, media and rural development. His period as Minister for Urban Development coincided with the roll-out and early implementation of several central schemes aimed at urban infrastructure, affordable housing and city-level governance reforms. His responsibilities in Information and Broadcasting involved oversight of government communication policies and regulatory matters pertaining to the media and entertainment sectors.
Public image, style and legacy
Naidu is widely recognized as a seasoned parliamentarian and a vocal public speaker. He has been associated with a pragmatic, organizational approach to politics and is often described as a consensus-builder within his party and in legislative settings. His tenure as a senior leader of a major national party and later as Vice President placed him at the intersection of party politics and constitutional office, giving him a distinct role in contemporary Indian public life.
Distinctive facts and context
Key points to note about his career include his movement between party leadership roles and government portfolios, the fact that he served in successive coalition and single-party administrations, and that as Vice President he carried the dual responsibilities of a constitutional official and the chair of the Rajya Sabha.
