Early life and training

Born in England and raised in Australia from adolescence, Roberts trained as an artist in Melbourne and later travelled to Europe to study and broaden his skill in painting from life. His education combined formal academic training with direct observation outdoors, a balance that informed his mature work.

Heidelberg School and artistic approach

Roberts was a central figure in the artist camps around Heidelberg and Eaglemont alongside artists such as Frederick McCubbin and Arthur Streeton. The group favoured plein‑air techniques: working outdoors to capture changing light, colour and atmosphere. Roberts brought a careful draftsmanship and an interest in composition to these experiments, producing works that mixed impressionistic brushwork with narrative content.
