Overview

Sean Duval Price (March 17, 1972 – August 8, 2015) was an American rapper and a prominent figure in underground hip hop. He first gained attention in the 1990s as one half of the duo Heltah Skeltah, where he performed under the stage names Ruckus or Ruck. Over a career that spanned two decades he was associated with the Brooklyn-based collective Boot Camp Clik, released several solo albums, and formed the supergroup Random Axe.

Early career and groups

Price emerged from the Brooklyn hip hop scene and became closely linked with Duck Down Records and the Boot Camp Clik family, a loose coalition of artists from the New York independent rap community. As part of Heltah Skeltah he and partner Rock contributed to the gritty, sample-driven sound that characterized East Coast underground rap of the mid-1990s. Heltah Skeltah's early releases helped establish Price's reputation for punchy delivery and offbeat humor.

Solo work and musical style

On his solo records Price combined aggressive, hard-hitting bars with a distinctive voice and a sharp sense of comic timing. His breakthrough solo album, Monkey Barz, attracted acclaim for its balance of street narratives and clever wordplay. Later albums continued to emphasize muscular production and Price's blunt, often self-deprecating persona. Critics and fans noted his ability to mix battle-rap bravado with unexpected warmth and wit.

Collaborations and later projects

Price continued to record with Boot Camp Clik and pursued collaborations across the independent scene. In 2011 he joined Random Axe, a supergroup pairing him with Detroit rapper Guilty Simpson and producer Black Milk; the trio released a well-received self-titled album that showcased tougher, more focused production. Price also guested on numerous projects and maintained a reputation as a reliable collaborator.

Death and legacy

Price died unexpectedly in his sleep on August 8, 2015. His passing prompted widespread tributes from peers and fans and led to posthumous releases that collected unreleased material and celebrated his influence. He is remembered for his distinctive voice, sharp lyricism, and role in sustaining the ethos of independent East Coast hip hop.
