Ronna Romney McDaniel (born January 19, 1973) is an American political operative and leader within the Republican Party. She has been the chairwoman of the Republican National Committee since January 19, 2017, after serving in state party leadership. McDaniel is part of the extended Romney political family: she is a granddaughter of George W. Romney and the niece of former presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Early life and family
Born into a family with a long involvement in politics and public service, McDaniel has often been described as a third-generation figure in American political life. Her upbringing included exposure to political campaigns and public affairs. She later entered party politics and organizational roles that drew on that background. The Romney connection has shaped public expectations and media attention regarding her career and public statements.
Political career and offices
Before taking on the national party role, McDaniel led her state organization as chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party. Her state-level work preceded her election to the RNC chairmanship, where her responsibilities expanded to national strategy, fundraising, and coordination with campaigns and state parties. As RNC chair she has overseen the party’s national operations across multiple election cycles.
Roles and responsibilities
As chairwoman of the national committee, McDaniel’s duties include:
- Leading fundraising efforts and managing the national party budget;
- Coordinating campaign support, messaging, and voter outreach across states;
- Representing the party publicly and building relationships with elected officials, donors, and allied organizations;
- Organizing national conventions and internal party processes.
Public profile and notable topics
McDaniel’s tenure has involved both organizational achievements and controversies typical for a party chair during polarized political periods. She has been a prominent voice in defending party positions, mobilizing voters, and shaping strategic priorities for election cycles. The national role requires balancing grassroots activists, elected officials, and donor interests while responding to fast-changing political events.
Personal life and health
McDaniel lives with her husband, Patrick McDaniel, and their two children in Northville, Michigan. In 2020 she publicly disclosed a positive test for COVID-19, an instance that drew attention because of her high-profile role and the broader public-health context. Beyond her party duties, she remains a recognizable figure due to family ties and ongoing involvement in national politics.
