Ram Baran Yadav: Nepal's First President and Physician-Politician

Early life and medical career

Trained as a medical doctor, Yadav practised medicine before entering full-time politics. His medical background informed his public work and gave him practical experience in public health matters. Throughout his career he was associated with initiatives and discussions on improving health services and access to care, particularly in underserved areas.

Political career before the presidency

Yadav was long affiliated with the Nepali Congress party. He served as Minister of State for Health in the early 1990s and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1999. In these roles he worked on health-sector policy and represented his constituents in the national legislature. His professional reputation and party experience positioned him as a consensus candidate when Nepal moved to republican governance.

The presidency (2008–2015)

Following the abolition of the monarchy, the Constituent Assembly elected Yadav as the first President. As president, his duties were largely ceremonial under Nepal’s interim arrangements, but he also performed important constitutional functions: formally appointing heads of government, endorsing legislation, and representing the state at ceremonial and diplomatic events. He sought to present a non-partisan image after leaving active party politics upon taking office.

Yadav’s presidency coincided with a turbulent and formative period in Nepal’s political development, including the work of the Constituent Assembly and the promulgation of a new constitution in 2015.
