Pratibha Patil (born 19 December 1934) is an Indian politician best known for being the first woman to hold the office of President of India, serving a full term from 2007 to 2012. A senior figure in the Indian National Congress, she brought to the presidency decades of experience in state and national public life. Early life and background

Pratibha Patil was born on 19 December 1934 in Maharashtra. Over several decades she established a base in regional politics and public service before rising to national prominence. Political career

Patil served in both state and national legislatures and held a range of public offices through her career. Election to the presidency

In 2007 Patil was selected as the Congress-led coalition’s candidate for President and went on to win the office, becoming the 12th President of India. As President she performed the constitutional duties associated with the office for the full five-year term, from 2007 to 2012.
