Paulo Manuel Carvalho de Sousa, CavIH (born 30 August 1970), is a Portuguese former professional footballer who went on to a managerial career. A midfielder during his playing days, he has served as head coach of the Poland national team since his appointment in 2023.

Club career

Sousa began his senior career in Portugal before moving abroad. He featured for both of Lisbon's major clubs early on, then transferred to top European sides where he enjoyed notable success in continental competition.

  • Juventus — moved to Italy and won the UEFA Champions League with the club
  • Borussia Dortmund — joined the German side and was part of the squad that also lifted the European Cup

International career

Sousa was a member of Portugal's so-called "Golden Generation" and represented his country at major tournaments, including two UEFA European Championships and the 2002 FIFA World Cup. During his international tenure he was regularly selected for the national side and took part in several high-profile matches for Portugal.

Coaching career

After retiring as a player Sousa moved into coaching in the late 2000s. He has worked in several countries with a mix of club and national-team assignments. His managerial honours include league titles won while in charge of Maccabi Tel Aviv and FC Basel. In 2023 he accepted the role of head coach of Poland.
