Overview
Pat Cox (born 28 November 1952) is an Irish former broadcaster and politician who played a prominent role in European politics at the turn of the 21st century. He served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 1989 until 2004 and was elected President of the European Parliament from 2002 to 2004. Before his full-time political career he worked in Irish television journalism and later held elected office at national level as a Teachta Dála (TD) representing Cork South-Central.
Early career in media and national politics
Cox began his public career in journalism and television. He became known to Irish audiences as a presenter on RTÉ’s current affairs programme Today Tonight, reflecting a background in reporting and political interviewing. His media experience helped shape his public profile and communication style when he later entered electoral politics. After his work in broadcasting he moved into national politics and served as a TD for Cork South-Central prior to his election to the European Parliament.
European Parliament service
First elected to the European Parliament in 1989, Cox represented Irish constituencies for three terms. During his time as an MEP he was associated with pro-European and liberal-centrist groups and took part in parliamentary committees and debates on EU institutional reform, enlargement and democratic accountability. His European career culminated in his election as President of the European Parliament in 2002, a role in which he chaired plenary sittings and acted as the institution’s external representative.
Presidency and context
As President (2002–2004) Cox presided over a critical period that included debates about the EU’s constitutional future and the large enlargement of the European Union in 2004. The president’s responsibilities include overseeing parliamentary procedure, representing the Parliament in inter-institutional relations and signing adopted legislation. Cox’s tenure is often noted for emphasising parliamentary visibility and engagement with new member states as the EU prepared to admit several Central and Eastern European countries.
Roles, style and later activity
Cox’s career combined media skills with parliamentary experience. He was regarded as an effective communicator who sought to bridge national and European debates. After leaving the European Parliament in 2004 he remained active in public life through speaking, advisory work and involvement in civic initiatives, drawing on his experience in both journalism and EU institutions.
