Guillermo Enrique "Memo" Morales Portillo (6 April 1937 – 1 January 2017) was a Venezuelan singer widely recognized as one of the principal voices of popular orchestras in Venezuela. Often called El Gitano Maracucho (a reference to his charismatic persona and origin in the Maracaibo region), Morales became known for his strong, expressive vocal delivery and his role as a frontman for large dance and tropical ensembles.

Musical career and collaborations

Morales spent much of his career as the lead singer for several important orchestras, contributing to the sound of mid-20th century Venezuelan popular music. In 1981 he co-founded the band La Nuestra with Luisín Landaez, and in 1984 he joined with bandleader Cheo García to create La Gran Orquesta de Cheo y Memo. That partnership lasted through the 1980s and into the early 1990s, until García's death in 1994. Morales's work with these ensembles combined elements of tropical dance music, bolero, and other popular Latin forms of the period.
