Dorthea Lauren Allegra Lapkus (born September 6, 1985) is an American actress and comedian whose work spans television, film, improv and audio comedy. She is best known for playing the earnest and idiosyncratic Susan Fischer on the Netflix ensemble drama Orange Is the New Black and for a recurring part as Jess on the HBO series Crashing. Lapkus combines character-driven acting with a background in improvisation, which informs her comic timing and vocal work.

Early career and improv background

Lapkus began performing comedy in the mid-2000s, developing characters and sketches on the live stage before moving into television and film. She honed her improvisational skills in Chicago and Los Angeles, performing with and studying at well-known improv venues and ensembles. That training helped her secure supporting parts on network and cable comedies and led to opportunities in scripted drama where she often brings subtle humor to dramatic scenes.

Breakthrough and notable roles

Her recurring role on the Netflix drama brought Lapkus wider recognition, enabling a steady stream of guest appearances on late-night and sitcom programs. She has appeared on shows such as The Middle, The Big Bang Theory, and Billy Eichner–style panel and game programs, as well as talk shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live!. On the big screen she has had supporting parts in major studio films, including a role in the blockbuster Jurassic World.

Beyond dramatic and live-action work, Lapkus is known for her vocal performances and for creating memorable, eccentric characters. She frequently uses voice and cadence to differentiate roles, which has led to animation and voice-over opportunities in addition to on-camera parts.

Podcasts and other projects

Lapkus has been active in the podcasting scene, both hosting her own shows and appearing as a guest on others. Her audio work emphasizes improvisation and long-form character interviews, allowing her to experiment with different comedic personas and formats. This aspect of her career has broadened her audience and showcased a versatility distinct from her television and film appearances.
