Overview
Kenne Fant (born Carl-Henrik Fant; 1 January 1923 – 30 May 2016) was a Swedish performer and filmmaker. Over a career that began in the 1940s he worked as an actor, later moving into directing and writing for film. Fant is remembered for several lead roles in post‑war Swedish cinema and for directing a notable screen adaptation of a classic children’s novel.
Early life
Fant was born on 1 January 1923 in the town of Strängnäs, Sweden, and registered at birth as Carl‑Henrik Fant. Details of his early training and first stage or screen appearances are characteristic of Swedish actors of his generation, many of whom began in theatre before appearing in films produced during and after World War II.
Acting career
In the late 1940s Fant appeared in a series of dramatic parts that established him as a recognizable screen presence. Among his better known roles are the character Göran Thome in the 1948 film The Most Beautiful on the Earth and the role of Arne in the 1949 picture Prison. His performances from this period reflect the sober, character‑driven style of Swedish cinema at the time.
Directing and writing
After several years as an actor, Fant expanded his work to include directing and writing. He directed the 1962 film Adventures of Nils Holgersson, an adaptation of Selma Lagerlöf’s classic tale about a boy who travels across Sweden on the back of a goose. The production placed Fant among filmmakers who translated well‑known Swedish literature to the screen for family audiences.
Legacy and death
Fant lived to an advanced age and remained part of Sweden’s cultural memory as a mid‑century actor and director. He died on 30 May 2016 in Stockholm, Sweden, aged 93. His career illustrates the common mid‑century trajectory from acting into behind‑the‑camera roles, and his work on adaptations helped sustain interest in Sweden’s literary heritage on film.
