Giovanni Sartori

Key contributions and approach

Sartori emphasized clear conceptual definitions and warned against what he called "conceptual stretching," the misuse of categories across very different contexts. His work linked institutional arrangements to party competition and government formation. He developed influential typologies of party systems and explored the effects of electoral systems on party fragmentation, polarization and governability.

Giovanni Sartori died in Florence, Italy, on 4 April 2017 from throat cancer. His legacy endures through the continued use of his typologies and methodological warnings in comparative research and constitutional debates.
