William Horton "Bill" Kurtis (born September 21, 1940) is an American television journalist, narrator, news anchor, producer and historian. He came to public attention as an anchor for CBS Morning News and later became widely recognized for his distinctive narration of documentary and true-crime television programs. Kurtis has combined reporting, production and historical perspective across a career spanning broadcast news and long-form television.

Early life and education

Kurtis spent much of his youth in Chicago, Illinois. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kansas and later completed legal studies, receiving a Juris Doctor from Washburn University School of Law. That combination of journalism training and legal education informed his later work on investigative and crime-related programs.

Career and notable work

After early work in local news and network broadcasting, Kurtis anchored national morning news for CBS. He subsequently moved into documentary production and narration, becoming known for a calm, authoritative voice suited to crime and historical storytelling. He has narrated and appeared on a variety of programs, including long-running crime and investigative series produced for cable television and public broadcasting.

  • Television anchoring and reporting: national and local news roles early in his career.
  • Documentary narration: frequent narrator of crime and investigative programs.
  • Production: founder and operator of a production company creating documentary and historical programming.

Kurtis's work often bridges journalism and history: his programs typically emphasize archival materials, interviews and legal context. Producers and viewers frequently cite his measured delivery and clear enunciation as factors that helped popularize true-crime television in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

Throughout his life Kurtis has combined professional activity with public-interest projects. He has collaborated with other producers and storytellers to bring courtroom context and community history to television audiences.
