Andy Fraser (Andrew McLan Fraser, 3 July 1952 – 16 March 2015) was an English songwriter and bass guitarist whose work influenced rock music from the late 1960s onward. He is widely remembered as a founding member of the blues-rock band Free, joining the group as a teenager and contributing both as a performer and a principal writer.

Early life and rise with Free

Fraser formed the core of Free in 1968 when he was about 15 years old. His melodic bass lines and compositional skill helped shape the band’s early sound, which combined blues structures with more expansive rock arrangements. With Free he achieved commercial success and international exposure, and he co-wrote some of the band’s best-known material.

Musical style and songwriting

Fraser’s bass playing was noted for its musicality and for serving songs rather than merely anchoring rhythm. He wrote and arranged songs across a variety of settings: band recordings, solo projects, and collaborations. His songwriting often balanced concise pop hooks with blues and rock sensibilities, making several tracks enduring staples of classic rock radio.

Later career and collaborations

After Free’s initial run, Fraser continued to record and perform in different lineups and as a solo artist. He worked with other musicians in studio and live settings and remained active in music for more than forty years. His output included albums, session appearances, and stage performances that showcased his range as both player and composer.

Personal life, health, and legacy

In later years Fraser lived in California. Reports indicate he faced serious health challenges, including battles with cancer and AIDS. He died at his home in March 2015; at the time his passing was reported alongside ongoing inquiries into the exact circumstances. Fraser is survived by his family, and his influence persists among bassists and songwriters who cite the melodic approach he brought to rock bass playing.
