Overview
Big Brother 2007, commonly called Big Brother 8 in the United Kingdom, was the eighth regular series of the Channel 4 reality television programme. Presented by Davina McCall, the series ran from 30 May 2007 until 31 August 2007, lasting 94 days. The show followed the familiar Big Brother format in which a group of strangers lived together in a specially built house, isolated from the outside world, under constant video surveillance and subject to regular nominations and public evictions. The series concluded with Brian Belo declared the winner and awarded the standard £100,000 prize.
Format and notable twists
This series retained Big Brother's core elements—daily life under observation, a private Diary Room for reflections and nominations, weekly tasks set by Big Brother, and live eviction shows—but introduced notable scheduling and entry twists. Rather than introducing all participants at once, producers opened the house to an initial group of female contestants on launch night, with male housemates entering gradually over the first two weeks. A further set of five late entrants (three women and two men) joined on Day 59, creating new dynamics and reshaping alliances late in the run. In total, 22 housemates appeared during the series.
Housemates and structure
The gradual entry plan aimed to produce fresh interaction and conflict as personalities were added at different stages. As with other seasons, housemates took part in weekly shopping and luxury tasks that could affect provisions and privileges in the house. The physical layout included the signature communal living areas, bedrooms, kitchen, garden and a Diary Room where the unseen Big Brother posed questions and heard private confessions.
Broadcast and presentation
The main show aired on Channel 4 with supplementary programming and extended coverage on E4. Davina McCall continued in her role as presenter, introducing live evictions and framing the series narrative for viewers. Reception and legacy
Critical and audience reaction to this season was mixed. Reported ratings were lower than some earlier series, and commentary at the time noted that staggered entries and cast size affected the viewing rhythm compared with seasons in which the entire cast began together. Nonetheless, the series preserved Big Brother's role as a high-profile reality programme in the UK television landscape. Winner Brian Belo used the exposure to launch a short period of media activity following the show.
