Overview

Vilnius County is one of the ten first-level territorial divisions of Lithuania, located in the southeastern part of the country. It contains the national capital and largest city, Vilnius, which serves as the region's economic, cultural and political center. The county functions today primarily as a territorial and statistical unit rather than a local administration.

Geography and subdivisions

The county covers a mix of urban and rural landscapes, with river valleys, lakes and patches of forest. It borders neighboring regions and the international boundary to the east. Administratively, Vilnius County encompasses the city of Vilnius plus several surrounding municipalities, for example Vilnius city municipality and Vilnius district municipality, as well as Trakai and other local municipalities.

History and administrative change

Like other Lithuanian counties, Vilnius County was established to coordinate regional services and statistical reporting. On 1 July 2010 the national government discontinued county-level administrations; functions were redistributed to national ministries and municipal governments. Despite that change, the name and boundaries of Vilnius County continue to be used for planning, statistics and certain territorial references.

Economy, culture and institutions

Vilnius is the main economic engine of the county and the country, hosting major public institutions, universities and companies. The city’s historic center is notable for its architecture and cultural heritage, including a well-preserved Old Town recognized internationally. Educational establishments such as long-standing universities contribute to the region’s role as an academic and cultural hub.

Transport and significance

The county contains key transport links by road, rail and air that connect Lithuania with regional and international destinations. Its position and infrastructure make it central to national governance, higher education, commerce and tourism.
