Transcription is the conversion of information from one form to another — notably RNA synthesis from DNA, phonetic or orthographic notation of speech, and producing written or musical records from audio.

Transcription denotes the act of converting information expressed in one form into another. In cells, transcription is the first step of gene expression: an enzyme called RNA polymerase reads a DNA sequence and synthesizes a complementary RNA molecule. This RNA can be messenger RNA (mRNA), ribosomal RNA (rRNA), transfer RNA (tRNA), or regulatory non-coding RNAs.
