Name and history

The name Toa Payoh derives from Hokkien, commonly translated as “big swamp,” reflecting the district’s original marshy terrain before urban redevelopment. Much of today’s estate was built from the 1960s by the Housing and Development Board (HDB) as part of a nationwide programme to provide modern public housing. Over subsequent decades Toa Payoh has been incrementally upgraded while retaining landmarks from its formative years.
