Overview
Miles Gilbert "Tim" Horton (January 12, 1930 – February 21, 1974) was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman and entrepreneur. Over a 24‑season National Hockey League career he became known for physical, reliable defensive play and for his longevity on the ice. Off it, he co‑founded the coffee-and-doughnut chain that bears his name, which grew to become a major Canadian franchise.
Playing career
Horton built a reputation as a classic stay‑at‑home defenceman: strong positional sense, hard hitter and dependable partner on the back end. He played for several NHL clubs during his long career, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres. While with Toronto he was part of multiple Stanley Cup–winning teams and was widely respected by teammates and opponents for his consistency and endurance.
Business ventures
While still active as a player, Horton entered the food service business. In the mid‑1960s he opened his first restaurant under the Tim Hortons name and later partnered with business associates to expand the concept. After his death the business continued to grow and became one of Canada's largest quick‑service restaurant chains, closely associated with everyday coffee, baked goods and a broadly recognized brand.
Death and legacy
Horton's life was cut short in a single‑vehicle car crash in Ontario in February 1974, at age 44. He was later honoured for his achievements in hockey with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame. His dual legacy endures in the sports world for his long NHL tenure and in Canadian popular culture through the restaurant chain that carries his name.
