The Pharcyde

The Pharcyde is an American underground hip-hop group from South Los Angeles, formed in 1989. Its founding members are Tre "Slimkid" Hardson, Derrick "Fatlip" Stewart, Imani Wilcox and Romye "Bootie Brown" Robinson.

Biography

In 1991, The Pharcyde signed a record deal with the Delicious Vinyl music label. Their debut album Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde was released in 1992. The album was well received in the trade press, but only reached #75 in the American charts. Tours with A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul and an appearance at the 1994 Lollapalooza festival followed. A year later, they released their second album, Labcabincalifornia. This was followed by a lengthy hiatus. The third album Plain Rap was released in 2000 after a five-year hiatus on the Four Music label of the German hip-hop band Die Fantastischen Vier. In 2004, the fourth album Humboldt Beginnings was released on their own label Chapter One.

The special feature of the music video for the song Drop is that it was shot with less than ten cuts and is shown backwards. In order to make the mouth movements still look synchronous to the music, the musicians had to practice long sections of "backwards" rapping.

On April 24, 2008, an official press release confirmed that the hip-hop group had reunited with its original lineup.
