Golden Palace was the follow-up series to the sitcom Golden Girls, filmed and broadcast from 1992 to 1993.
In the series Golden Girls, Beatrice Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty had played a four-women flat-sharing community who spend their twilight years together in Florida. Through alternating guest appearances and crossovers, the series Golden Girls, Golden Palace, Harry's Nest and Hello Sister! form a shared series universe.
After 180 Golden Girls episodes, Arthur dropped out of the series as she felt the show would be in danger of losing originality and wordplay with further episodes. The three remaining actresses wanted to continue filming and so the series Golden Palace was born, in which the three continued their respective roles from the Golden Girls and as such bought and ran a hotel - the Golden Palace.
For this, an almost identical team was used. Thus the title melody - now in an interpretation of the composer Andrew Gold and not as before by Cynthia Fee - and as composers Gold and George Aliceson Tipton remained. In the first episodes of Golden Palace even the scene music of the Golden Girls was taken over and only step by step replaced by independent compositions.
The series was cancelled after one season. The success of the Golden Girls had been based on the fact that the four characters were ideally matched and harmonized with each other. However, it quickly became clear that this interaction no longer worked without Beatrice Arthur. Don Cheadle and Cheech Marin were brought into the series to replace her. Roland is the receptionist at the Golden Palace Hotel and Chuy, with active support from Sophia, takes care of the kitchen. The boy Oliver also makes more frequent appearances.
