The Group of Five or The Mighty Little Group (Russian: moguchaya kuchka, Cyrill. могучая кучка) was a group of 19th-century Russian composers: Mili Balakirev, Alexander Borodin, César Cui, Modest Mussorgsky and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. They called themselves the Novators.

The composers joined forces in SaintPetersburg in 1862. The eminent art critic Vladimir Stasov acted as their mentor. Their goal was to promote a national Russian music in the succession of Mikhail Glinka. The Group of Five thus set themselves apart from other Russian composers who were more closely oriented to Western European models. The best-known representatives of this other circle of composers are Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Anton Rubinstein.
