History and administration

The present district was established during the municipal and district reforms of the early 1990s. In December 1993 several former districts were merged — notably Luckenwalde, Jüterbog and Zossen — and parts of adjacent territories, including small areas once belonging to the former district of Luckau, were incorporated to form the larger administrative unit. The reorganization aimed to streamline services and local planning in the post-reunification period.

Geography and landscape

The Fläming is a low ridge of glacial origin with mixed woodland, heath and arable fields. The district features nature reserves, small lakes and river valleys that support biodiversity and opportunities for outdoor activities. Its landscape is appreciated for scenic drives, walking routes and quieter rural scenery close to the Berlin metropolitan area.

Recreation and notable routes

A distinctive recreational feature is the paved long-distance route for inline skating and cycling known as Fläming-Skate, which extends for about 160 km and links many towns and leisure sites. The route is widely promoted for tourists and local leisure users as a safe, continuous surface suited to skating, cycling and jogging.

Economy, transport and communities

The local economy is diverse, with agriculture, small and medium-sized enterprises, tourism and a growing presence of renewable energy installations. Good road and rail connections facilitate commuting to Berlin and other regional centers. Principal towns and market centres include Luckenwalde, Jüterbog and Zossen, each with historic centres and municipal services.

Sights, culture and curiosities

Towns in the district offer medieval churches, timber-framed houses, local museums and festivals that reflect regional history and traditions. A notable administrative curiosity is that the town of Teltow itself is not part of the district bearing its name. In a similar way, the town of Dahme lies outside the district of Dahme-Spreewald; these boundary and naming quirks are reminders of historical municipal arrangements.
