Architecture and interior

Designed by architect Pierre Manotte, the synagogue incorporates stylistic references common to synagogue architecture of the period: horseshoe arches, decorative motifs evoking North African traditions, and an emphasis on polychrome detail. Although its exterior is modest compared with larger urban synagogues, the interior is organized to serve congregational worship, with space for a bimah and women's seating arranged according to traditional Sephardi practice. The finished structure has a relatively small seating capacity compared with the growing Jewish population of the 19th century.

History and context

Before the present building, the local community used an older prayer space that could accommodate the Jewish residents of Besançon—numbering several hundred in the mid‑19th century. As the community sought a more permanent and representative synagogue, municipal authorization and funding enabled construction on a central urban site. The new synagogue opened in the early 1870s and replaced the earlier facility; despite the change, the congregation remained small enough that capacity was limited to roughly two hundred worshippers.

The congregation follows Sephardi liturgical customs and rites, a tradition that distinguishes it from Ashkenazi communities elsewhere in France.
