Origins and development

Pakzad began organizing when restrictions on women’s freedoms were severe. What started as discreet community support during those years developed into a more formal organization after political changes opened limited space for civil society. The group that became Voice of Women gradually expanded its activities to operate publicly and to respond to urgent needs across different Afghan communities.

Activities and programs

Voice of Women provides a mix of direct services and advocacy. Typical programs have included:

• educational and literacy classes for girls and women;
• vocational training and livelihood support to foster economic independence;
• shelter, counseling and basic protection for women at risk;
• legal awareness and assistance to help women navigate family and criminal justice issues.

These services are intended to reduce isolation, increase options for vulnerable women, and promote longer-term social change.

Impact, challenges and recognition

Pakzad’s work attracted international attention because it combined grassroots service delivery with public advocacy for women’s rights. Operating in Afghanistan has meant persistent risks: activists and aid workers have faced social opposition, security threats and political constraints. International recognition, including the International Women of Courage Award, helped raise visibility for the needs she sought to address and for broader Afghan women’s rights efforts.

Today her career is cited as an example of sustained civic leadership under difficult conditions. The organization and Pakzad’s example continue to be referenced in discussions about women’s access to education, protection and legal support in Afghanistan.
