Overview
Sumter County is a rural county in Alabama with a long agricultural heritage. Created on December 18, 1832, the county was named for Revolutionary War General Thomas Sumter of South Carolina. According to the 2010 census, the population was 13,763. The county seat and largest town is Livingston, which serves as the cultural and administrative center.
History
Sumter County was organized in the aftermath of early 19th-century land cessions in the region and developed as part of Alabama's fertile Black Belt. Plantations and cotton cultivation dominated the antebellum economy. Over the 20th century the county experienced economic and demographic changes common to the rural South, including mechanization of agriculture and migration to urban areas.
Geography and economy
The county's landscape includes rolling Black Belt soils, river bottoms and wooded tracts shaped by the greater Tombigbee basin. Agriculture and timber remain important economic activities alongside small-scale manufacturing and service businesses. The presence of a regional university influences local employment and cultural life.
Demographics and culture
Sumter County has a predominantly rural population with communities centered on small towns and dispersed farms. Livingston is home to the University of West Alabama, an institution that contributes to arts, athletics and higher education in the county and region. County traditions reflect the history of the Black Belt, including religious and community organizations that play a key role in local life. For recent population and economic data see the county's official resources and state reports (state resources, county seat resources).
