Geology and fossils

Solnhofen gives its name to the Solnhofen Plattenkalk, a very fine-grained Jurassic limestone formed about 150 million years ago in a shallow tropical lagoon. The stone is famous as a Lagerstätte: a deposit that preserves soft tissues and fine details. Paleontologists have recovered exceptionally complete fossils here, most famously specimens of Archaeopteryx, along with pterosaurs, fishes, crustaceans and insects. These finds have been crucial for understanding Jurassic ecosystems and the early evolution of birds.

History and uses of the stone

The local limestone was quarried for centuries. Because its layers split into flat, smooth slabs it became a preferred material for lithographic printing in the 19th century and for architectural uses and sculpture. Quarrying shaped much of the town’s economy and landscape; abandoned pits later filled with water and became characteristic ponds near Solnhofen.
