Overview

Soccsksargen, commonly written SOCCSKSARGEN and officially designated Region XII, is an administrative region in south-central Mindanao in the Philippines. The name is an acronym formed from its principal political units: South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City. The regional center is Koronadal, sometimes called Marbel, which functions as the seat of regional government and coordination. The area combines coastal zones, river plains and upland highlands, producing a mix of agricultural and marine resources.

Geography and subdivisions

Soccsksargen is organized into four provinces and one highly urbanized city. Its political subdivisions are listed below:

  • South Cotabato
  • Cotabato (often referred to as North Cotabato)
  • Sultan Kudarat
  • Sarangani
  • General Santos City (highly urbanized)

The region is drained by the Mindanao River (also known as the Rio Grande de Mindanao), which flows through the Cotabato plains and discharges into Illana Bay and the larger Moro Gulf. Coastal areas, especially around General Santos and Sarangani, support extensive fisheries.

Economy, culture and environment

Soccsksargen's economy is diverse: agriculture (rice, corn, coconut, banana, pineapple and rubber) and commercial fishing—most prominently the tuna industry centered on General Santos—are major contributors. Agribusiness, food processing and local commerce provide employment across provinces. The region also contains protected areas, upland forests and mineral occurrences that shape land use decisions.

People and history

The population is ethnically and culturally mixed, including Visayan and Ilocano settlers alongside indigenous groups such as the T'boli and Blaan, and Muslim communities in some municipalities. Soccsksargen has evolved administratively over decades and is commonly referred to as Region XII in government documents. Koronadal serves as the coordination center for regional services and development planning. For official administrative information see this regional page and local government portals such as Koronadal.

Significance and notable facts

Key distinguishing features of the region include its role as a national tuna hub, the extensive Mindanao River basin which supports large irrigation systems, and a landscape that ranges from coastal fisheries to highland cultural sites.
