Sindhi Wikipedia is the edition of the free online encyclopedia produced in the Sindhi language. It aims to provide articles and reference material for native Sindhi speakers and learners, and to document subjects of local and global interest in a language used across parts of Pakistan and India.
Overview
Launched in February 2006, Sindhi Wikipedia grew as part of the multilingual Wikimedia movement. Early growth was modest: by mid-2015 the project contained more than 3,000 articles. Like other smaller-language editions, it depends on volunteer contributors for writing, editing and maintenance.
Language, script and presentation
Sindhi is an Indo-Aryan language with distinct varieties and a literary tradition. It is commonly written in an extended Arabic-derived script in Pakistan and sometimes rendered in Devanagari in India. Sindhi Wikipedia articles reflect these orthographic realities and must accommodate script, font and input considerations for contributors and readers.
Characteristics
- Community-driven content created by volunteer editors.
- Interface and articles that must support right-to-left layout when using the Arabic script.
- Coverage that often emphasizes regional topics, culture, history and biographies relevant to Sindhi-speaking populations.
The project is connected to the wider Wikimedia ecosystem and can be accessed from the central portal for language editions on Wikipedia. For information about the Sindhi language itself, resources may be linked from pages and help pages such as Sindhi language entries and community documentation.
Like many smaller Wikipedias, Sindhi Wikipedia faces challenges in recruiting regular contributors, improving article quality, and expanding reliable sources in the language. Nevertheless, it remains an important digital repository for preserving and sharing Sindhi knowledge and supporting literacy and education in the language.
