Origins and development

The city was founded in the mid-18th century as a fortified settlement and became the capital of the Karabakh Khanate. Its strategic hilltop location shaped its layout, with defensive walls, narrow streets and a citadel. Over the 19th century Shusha developed as a market town and a seat of local elites, while attracting artisans, musicians and poets.

Culture, architecture and notable people

Shusha has been celebrated as a center of Azerbaijani music, particularly mugham, and of literature and visual arts. It produced influential cultural figures and hosted important salons and gatherings. Surviving architectural features include mosques, caravanserai-like houses, mausoleums and fragments of fortification. The city is often described in Azerbaijani cultural memory as a "conservatory of the Caucasus."

In the modern period Shusha's status became tied to the broader conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. The city changed hands during fighting in the late 20th century and again in 2020, events that affected its population, built heritage and accessibility. These developments have led to international attention on preservation, reconstruction and the return of displaced residents.
