Geography

Shoreham lies at the foot of the South Downs and is bounded by the higher chalk hills to the north and the Adur Valley to the west. The town’s coast includes a pebble-and-sand beach and an estuarine harbour where the river meets the sea. Its location places it within the wider ribbon of settlement that spans much of the English south coast.

History and development

The settlement developed around its harbour and river mouth, with maritime and river-related activities shaping its growth over many centuries. Industry and housing expanded as transport links improved, and the town today reflects a mix of residential areas, commercial activity, and maritime facilities.

Economy and transport

The harbour remains an important local feature, supporting a combination of commercial, fishing and recreational vessels. Shoreham has road and rail connections that provide access to neighbouring coastal towns and regional centres. A small local airfield lies nearby and caters mainly for light aircraft and flying clubs.

Demography

According to the 2011 national census the population of Shoreham-by-Sea was 20,547. The town occupies just under 1,000 hectares, combining residential neighbourhoods with industrial and open spaces along the river and coast.

Local character

Shoreham’s setting—where river, beach and downs come together—gives it a distinct mix of maritime, urban and rural influences. The town functions as both a local service centre for nearby communities and as part of the larger conurbation along this stretch of the south coast.
