Sepultura was founded by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera. Max handled vocals (and earlier guitar) while Igor played drums; longtime guitarist Andreas Kisser and bassist Paulo Jr. joined during the band’s ascent. In 1996 Max Cavalera left and later formed Soulfly; vocalist Derrick Green joined Sepultura in 1997. Igor Cavalera departed in 2006 and later reunited with Max in a separate project, Cavalera Conspiracy. Drumming duties after Igor included Jean Dolabella and, from 2011, Eloy Casagrande.
