Overview
SeaMonkey is a free and open-source Internet application suite built around the Gecko rendering engine. It offers an integrated package of internet tools—web browser, e-mail and news client, calendar, HTML editor and an IRC client—designed for users who prefer a single, extensible application rather than separate programs. The project continues the lineage of the former Mozilla Application Suite and is coordinated by the community-led SeaMonkey Council.
Key components
- Web browser: a multi-tabbed browser core with standards support and extension capability. Browser page
- E-mail and news: a mail client with message management, filtering and mailbox handling. Mail client
- Calendar: event scheduling and reminders integrated with the mail component. Calendar
- HTML editor (Composer): a simple WYSIWYG editor for creating and editing web pages without separate software. HTML editor
- IRC client (ChatZilla): an integrated chat client for connecting to IRC networks and channels. IRC client
SeaMonkey runs on multiple operating systems and is appropriate for users and organizations that value cohesion and lower maintenance overhead. It preserves many features familiar from older Mozilla-era suites and supports add-ons and user configuration models similar to those predecessors.
History and development
The suite originated from the Mozilla Application Suite. When Mozilla shifted emphasis toward standalone Firefox and Thunderbird, volunteers and community contributors maintained the all-in-one approach by forming the SeaMonkey project. Development is community-driven: the codebase, issue tracking and releases are publicly accessible, and contributors can participate in testing, bug reports and patches. See the project site and the source code repository for details.
Uses and notable facts
SeaMonkey suits users who prefer integrated workflows—editing a page in Composer and previewing it in the bundled browser, or handling mail and calendar from a single interface. It is often chosen for its continuity with legacy features and for environments where installing one consolidated application is preferable. Development is volunteer-driven, so release cadence and feature additions reflect community priorities rather than corporate schedules.
Getting started and resources
To evaluate or deploy SeaMonkey, review supported platforms, documentation and community support. Consult the supported platforms list and the suite overview for functionality summaries. For downloads, contribution guidelines and development documentation see the developer resources.
