Sea of Okhotsk is a marginal sea located in the northwestern part of the Pacific. It is classified as a marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean and occupies waters surrounded by peninsulas, islands and the Siberian coastline.

Location and borders

  • On the east it is bounded by the Kamchatka Peninsula.
  • The Kuril Islands form the southeastern edge.
  • To the south the sea meets the Japanese island Hokkaidō and nearby island areas.
  • The western flank is lined by the island of Sakhalin.
  • A long stretch of eastern Siberian coast, including groups such as the Shantar Islands, borders the sea to the west and north.

The northeast corner of the basin includes Shelikhov Gulf. The name derives from the town of Okhotsk; that settlement was the first Russian town established in the Far East.
