Geography and composition

The three components differ markedly. Saint Helena is a volcanic island with steep ridges and the historic port of Jamestown. Ascension Island is lower and of more recent volcanic origin, with limited freshwater resources and strategic facilities. The Tristan da Cunha group lies far to the south and is the most isolated inhabited archipelago in the world, centred on the volcanic main island of Tristan da Cunha and accompanied by several outlying islands.

History and governance

Under British sovereignty for several centuries, the territory was formally known as "Saint Helena and Dependencies" until changes in 2009. A new 2009 constitution redefined the political arrangements and recognized the equal status of the constituent parts. The territory is administered by a Governor resident on Saint Helena who represents the Crown; Ascension and Tristan da Cunha each have local administrators and consultative bodies to manage local affairs.

Ecology, economy and society

These islands are internationally valued for their wildlife: seabird colonies, endemic plants and marine life are important both ecologically and for conservation. Much land is protected, and some islands are designated conservation areas. Economically the islands rely on small-scale fisheries, limited agriculture, government services, and tourism. Air and sea links are infrequent because of the remoteness, which shapes daily life and economic opportunity.
