Following a five-year interval after Splinter, the group entered the studio with a different production approach under Bob Rock. The sessions yielded material that the band released as singles and a full-length record in 2008. The album's production credits reflect Rock's involvement and a shift toward a more polished studio sound compared with some earlier releases; for production details see the album liner notes or related sources on record production (produced).

Drums and touring lineup
Although Atom Willard remained a member of the band during parts of the album period, the drum performances on the finished record were played by session drummer Josh Freese, who had also performed the drum tracks for the previous album. Contractual restrictions imposed by Geffen Records prevented Willard from participating in the recording, and he ultimately left the group in mid-2007 to concentrate on his role in Angels & Airwaves. For the subsequent tour, Pete Parada (formerly of Face to Face) joined The Offspring as their live drummer.
