Origins and development

RAND traces its roots to work begun inside the Douglas Aircraft Company in 1946 with an initiative to study long-term technological needs of the armed forces; it became an independent corporation in 1948. The institution’s name derives from the phrase "research and development" (R&D), although RAND’s emphasis has been analysis rather than engineering development. Over subsequent decades RAND grew from a small research group into an organization with a permanent staff of scholars and analysts addressing strategic, economic, and social questions.
