This article is about the city of Ramanathapuram. For other meanings, see Ramanathapuram (disambiguation).

Ramanathapuram (Tamil: இராமநாதபுரம் Irāmanātapuram [(ɨ)ˈɾaːmənaːd̪əpuɾʌm], formerly anglicised Ramnad) is a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located in southern Tamil Nadu about 440 km south of the capital Chennai not far from the coast of the Bay of Bengal. Ramanathapuram is the administrative seat of the district of the same name. The population is about 61,000 (2011 census).

The name Ramanathapuram means "City of the Lord of Rama" and refers to the god Shiva, who is worshipped in nearby Rameswaram along with the god Rama. According to myth, Rama is said to have moved to Sri Lanka here via the Adam's Bridge. Raghunatha Kilavan (1673-1708), one of the local princes who ruled the region with the title of Setupati, moved his capital from nearby Pogalur to Ramanathapuram and had the city fortified. In 1795, the British removed Setupati Muthuramalinga from office and placed Ramanathapuram under the administration of British India, but appointed his sister's heirs as zamindars (landlords). In 1892, the zamindari system was abolished, but the palace of Ramanathapuram remains in the possession of the Setupati family to this day.

76 percent of the inhabitants of Ramanathapuram are Hindus, 20 percent are Muslims and 3 percent are Christians. The main language, as in the whole of Tamil Nadu, is Tamil, which is spoken by 98 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
