Overview
Qaem Shahr (Persian: قائمشهر) is a city in northern Iran, serving as the administrative center of Qaem Shahr County within Mazandaran Province. Located on the low coastal plain south of the Caspian Sea, it functions as a regional hub for trade, transport and local industry. According to the national census, the city had a population of approximately 204,953 people in 2016.
Geography and environment
The city's setting on the Caspian littoral gives it a humid, temperate climate with abundant rainfall relative to much of Iran. The surrounding landscape is characterized by flat agricultural plains that rise toward the Alborz foothills. These conditions support rice cultivation, citrus orchards and other crops common to the southern Caspian region, and help shape local livelihoods and cuisine.
History and name
Historically the city was known as Shāhi (often transcribed as Shahi) until the period following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, when it was renamed Qaem Shahr. The modern name includes the element "Qaem," a title associated with the Twelver Shia tradition. Over the 20th century the town expanded from a market settlement to a mid-sized city as roads, rail links and small industry were established.
Economy and infrastructure
Qaem Shahr's economy blends agriculture, light manufacturing and services. Local markets trade rice, fruit and other produce from the Mazandaran plain, while small factories and workshops produce textiles, foodstuffs and consumer goods for nearby markets. The city is connected by road and rail to other urban centers in Mazandaran, making it an important node for regional transport.
Culture, sport and notable features
The city has active cultural life typical of provincial Iranian centers: bazaars, neighborhood mosques, schools and sports clubs. Qaem Shahr is particularly known for its enthusiasm for football; the local club has a devoted following in the province. The city has also produced athletes in traditional Iranian sports such as wrestling. Architectural and urban features combine older market areas with more recent residential and commercial development.
